Arpeggio
10" H X 20" W X 18" D  sold

Arpeggio is one of my first pop up works.  I designed the pop up using only one element, the 90 degree fold, or stair step, form.  By repeating that form, systematically varying the lengths and placement on the base quilt, I was able to get a complex arrangement from very simple parts.  Arpeggio is sewn with cotton fabrics and threads.  It is mounted in a Plexiglas "cradle" armature, but can also be free standing to open and close in true pop up style.

Flower Box
18" H X 44" L X 33" W open, 16" H X 12" L X 12" W closed  available

Flower Box is a combination of pop up and folding book techniques.  The whole composition folds into itself to be enclosed in a 16 X 12 X 12 box.  It opens to a 44 X 33 flat base with forms reaching up 18 inches high.  Cotton and organza fabrics, cotton, rayon and silk threads, yarns, raffia, embroidery floss, and glass beads make up the elements.

Three
9, 16" X 16" panels, arranged in 3 free standing triangles  available

Three's 9 panels are formed over corrugated vinyl squares, covered with upholstery and suiting fabrics, with cotton, satin, and organza pop up components.  Each pop up is designed to be an interactive exhibit in which I encourage the viewer to handle the art, opening and closing each one to see how it works.

Yin Yang
20" H X 7" L X 7" W  available

Yin Yang is a 3 dimensional pop up designed in an Escher-like composition of rising and falling stair steps.  It is made of cotton fabrics and thread with no wiring or armature needed to hold its form.

Twister
20" H X 18" W X 6" D  available

Twister uses a pop up technique that looks complex but it actually simple.  The inner pop up rotates in a circle as it opens and closes thanks to the pop up strips being sewn at 45 degree angles to each other.  The pop up was cut from the center of a square base quilt after the whole piece was free-motion quilted.  This makes the strips appear to blend into and rise out of the base as it moves.

Hokusai's Wave
15" H X 21" L X 20" W  available

Hokusai was the Japanese artist who created the famous "Great Wave of Kanagawa" wood block print.  It has been an inspiration for countless artists.  While attempting another idea, I made the pieces much longer than usual so that they unexpectedly sagged into curved lines.  I looked at the piece from the side view and saw I had made my own Great Wave - a "happy accident".  Hokusai's Wave is made of satin, organza and silk fabrics, and rayon and silk threads.

Slot Canyon
14"H X 24" L X 16" W  available

Like Arpeggio and Hokusai's Wave pieces above, Slot Canyon uses the simple Stair Step pop up element to form the composition.  What is unique to this work is the armature.  The Plexiglas form that holds the pop up and base quilt is twisted 90 degrees so that on end the work lies flat on its right side while the other end lies flat on its left side.  This is designed as an abstraction of how the red rocks in the slot canyons of Colorado and Utah twist into beautiful forms.

Dr. Suess Tries Ikebana
24" H X 16" L X 16" W  available

Each "blossom" in this flower arrangement is a pop up that opens and closes.  The base vase is also a fabric vessel with quilted patterns on each side.

Surprise
18" H X 23" L X 23" W  available

Surprise was designed to be an interactive exhibit piece.  It hangs from a wall sleeve and is closed with a button and cloth loop at the top center.  When unbuttoned, it falls open 90 degrees to show the full pop up form.  Surprise is made of cotton fabrics and threads..

Waves I
7" H X 10" L X 10" W  NFS

Waves is one of my teaching samples.  This small piece uses 3 variations of a simple 90 degree fold pop up stitched to the base quilt across the fold line.  It folds flat when closed, and opens to vertical.  The materials are spandex and organza fabrics, rayon thread, and glass beads, no wiring is required to hold its form.
